Arm64 on GitHub Actions: Powering faster, more efficient build systems
GitHub Actions now offers Arm-based Linux and Windows runners, providing developers with power, performance, and sustainability improvements for their GitHub Actions jobs. The runners can be used to build and deploy release assets wherever Arm architecture is used and are priced 37% less than GitHub's x64 Linux and Windows runners. The move allows developers to optimize compute costs while reducing their carbon footprints. Developers previously had to self-host or use QEMU virtualization which has been slower than running natively. Now, they can build, test, and deploy servers and applications directly on the Arm architecture. The runners are fully managed by GitHub and come with an image built by Arm that contains all the necessary tools for developers. GitHub plans to introduce Arm runners for open source projects by the end of the year.
