Server Islands

Astro plans to introduce a new feature called Server Islands in 2024 to enhance webpage performance and personalization. Building on the Islands frontend architecture developed in 2021, Server Islands allow for static, CDN-cached HTML page shells with dynamic content injection. The architecture enables unused JavaScript to be stripped from a page, providing quicker performance without sacrificing preferred UI components. Server Islands will also allow developers to combine the benefits of static pages' performance and cost-efficiency with the control and personalization of dynamic pages, without compromising Google's Core Web Vitals. The feature is currently in the design phase with prototyping underway.
