GitHub Availability Report: July 2024

GitHub faced a series of four degradations of various services in July, involving issues including configuration changes, resource cleanups gone awry, and network issues. Disruptions affected the Webhooks service on July 5, causing average delivery delays of 24 minutes and at maximum, 71 minutes. The degradation was triggered by a configuration change that removed authentication from Webhooks’ background job requests. A secondary issue caused further delay in GitHub actions resulting from failing health probes in the background job processing service. On July 13, GitHub Copilot encountered degradation with error rates peaking at 63%. This was due to a resource cleanup job from a partner service that inadvertently removed essential resources. Routine maintenance on July 16 resulted in Copilot Chat rejecting all requests. Lastly, network issues affected Actions, Copilot, and GitHub Pages services for 231 minutes. GitHub is implementing various improvements to reduce the probability of similar incidents in the future.
